“Acknowledge your and others’ range of linguistic differences as resources, and draw on those resources to develop rhetorical sensibility.”
From group work on our assignments to peer review, we learned the importance of collaboration with others as engineers throughout this class. As such, it is also important to consider that there are differences between one another. For instance, several of us differ in terms of what major we are pursuing (e.g. civil engineering, mechanical engineering, etc.) and level of expertise in certain fields. Thus, these differences are important to consider in teamwork, as it will affect communication between group members and the work outputted.
One way we utilize this Course Learning Outcome is through audience analysis. We use audience analysis sheets (Figure 1) to record a profile of our audience members, such as their reading level, occupation, etc. This helps us understand who we are writing to better and develop the professionalism and rhetoric of our content directed to them.
