Course Learning Outcome 6

“Formulate and articulate a stance through and in your writing.”

Stance is one of the rhetorical elements we consider in our writing as it is important to establish what position we, as authors, have on the content in our writing. It is defined as the writer’s attitude towards their topic. As many of the writing we do is persuasive, it is pertinent to establish where we stand on a topic to our audience and what we are persuading to them.

For instance, my memo was about the lack of assistance and navigation in the advising process for declaring a major in The City College of New York (CCNY). I wanted my audience to know that my stance on the issue was in favor of taking action to solve this issue (Figure 1) and am open to discussing this topic through an appointed meeting.
