Engineering Proposal

An engineering proposal is a document that is used to offer carrying out a project or research. The general purpose of a proposal is to present an issue to an audience and persuade them why your work is important. A proposal should be persuasive as you’re attempting to get authorization or funding to carry out your project or research. Audience should also be considered as your proposal will be targeted toward a specific audience’s issues and needs.

An engineering proposal generally consists of this structure:

  • Introduction: Helps the reader understand the context, scope, and organization of the proposal. The main topic of the proposal is addressed.
  • Problem Statement: Introduces the problem and provides additional information to help the reader understand the issue better.
  • Needs Statement: Addresses the needs of the audience in the proposal.
  • Objectives/Solution: Lists the goals regarding the problem statement at hand and proposes work that would be done in order to solve the problem.
  • Methods: Describes the procedures taken in the work done to solve the problem statement.
  • Resources: Lists the materials needed to complete the work.
  • Management: Lists the people involved in the work and provides some background information on each individual.
  • Qualifications: Introduces available positions for the work and lists the qualifications required to consider hiring.
  • Budget/Schedule: Estimates the costs required to complete the work and schedules times of estimated completion.

For this assignment, our group did an engineering proposal to modify merge lanes and traffic signs on select southern Nassau County roads to improve traffic flow, which would be especially useful during the event of an evacuation.
