Stance is defined as the writer’s attitude towards their topic. When utilizing persuasive writing like our assignments in this class, it is pertinent for your audience to understand what you feel regarding the topic you are writing about. Stance could vary depending on what genre you are conveying. For instance, it is preferable to take a more neutral stance when reporting your findings; however, remain somewhat persuasive in having your findings accepted. In genres like a memo, it would be preferable to take a clear stance for or against an issue so your audience can understand your exigence and purpose regarding the issue at hand, and as a result, take desired action in response.
For instance, my memo was about the lack of assistance and navigation in the advising process for declaring a major in The City College of New York (CCNY). My stance in the assignment (Figure 1) was in favor of taking action against such an issue through improvements to the process.
