A technical description is a document that describes a physical object through details, parts, and functions. They can be used as instructions or supplements to larger documents. The general purpose of a technical description is to help a reader visualize what they are working with. A technical description should descriptive, such as specifying, characterizing, and detailing a specific object; though you should not be too elaborate. Graphics are also helpful in detailing the object in particular to the reader. Audience should also be considered when presenting and describing your object.
A technical description generally consists of this structure:
- Introduction: Indicates your object and what your audience should know about it. A general description of the object and its function should also be included, along with a general overview of the description.
- Background: Background information of your object, considering that your audience may not know much about the object.
- Discussion of parts or characteristics: Discusses parts (components of the object) and characteristics (describable aspects) of the object along with descriptions of each part.
- Discussion of related operation or process: Summarizes associated functions and processes of the object.
- Conclusion: A brief paragraph summarizing the principal steps and how the components of the object function together
